How do I apply for free and reduced meal benefits for my child(ren)?

To receive benefits you must complete a Free and Reduced Price School Meals Family application with a list of everyone in the household. The application is mailed to each family in mid July, can be picked up at the school office or you can print one off by clicking here. To assure a quick response, fill out all required information correctly and return the form to the school office or mail to Jackson R-2 Schools, 614 East Adams, Jackson, MO 63755. Part 1 (Children in School) – List all the children attending Jackson R-2 Schools, school name, grade, and food stamp or temporary assistance number if applicable . Part 2 (Foster Child) – Complete this section ONLY if a foster child. Part 3 (Total Household Gross Income) - List all household members, income or check box if NO income. Part 4 (Signature and Social Security Number) – Adult completing the application must sign, date, and include the social security number of the household adult member who signed the application. An application cannot be approved without an adult household member signature and social security number. For further information you may call the Food Service Director or Food Service Designee.  You will be notified by mail whether your application has been approved for Free or Reduced meals or if it has been denied.

Why does my child bring home an application for meal benefits every year?

The National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program require an application be sent home with each student in the district. The program provides free and reduced meals for children of families unable to pay full price for the meals. To apply for these benefits, parents of students must fill out this application and return it to their school office or the administration office at Jackson R-2 Schools, 614 East Adams, Jackson, MO 63755. A new application must be filled out at the beginning of each year, on a current year application form. Meal benefits, breakfast and lunch meal service begins on the day the application is approved in the administration office and continues throughout the school year and the first thirty (30) days of the next school year. Any student who does not have a current application on file in the Administration Office will be unable to receive free/reduced meal benefits after thirty calendar days into the new school year.

Why was my child’s application denied for free/reduced meal benefits?

To understand why an application is denied, it is important to know how the application is reviewed. The Food Service designee approves all applications based on federal criteria in three different areas:

  1. Direct Certification automatically qualifies a student for free meals or if you list a Food Stamp or Temporary Assistance number on the application (Part 1).
  2. Foster children, who are placed in a home by the state may qualify for free meals or reduced meals based on the child’s personal use monthly income. Provide this information on the application (Part 2). A separate application must be completed for each foster child.
  3. Income/household families must be evaluated for eligibility based on the size of household and gross income.

If the application does not meet federal income guidelines, or if the application is not correctly completed, then it may be denied. If there is a question, the parent is encouraged to discuss the situation with the Food Service Designee.

Why was my child’s application selected for income verification?

Federal guidelines require all sponsors of the National School Lunch program to conduct income verification on a pre-selected percentage of all applications on file by October 31 of each year. Applications at the administration office are randomly selected for verification by using district–approved procedures. Within a specified time period, parent/guardians must provide adequate documentation to substantiate income. If information is not provided, the students will lose free/reduced meal benefits.

What are the income guidelines for the free/reduced meal program?

The National School Lunch and Breakfast program use USDA Income Eligibility Guidelines, which are adjusted annually for inflation. These guidelines are used when approving applications for children who apply to receive free or reduced meals.  Free meal benefit guidelines are 130% of Federal poverty guidelines and reduced are 185% of poverty guidelines.

How can I make a deposit on my child’s account, and check their account balance?

Prepaying for lunch and breakfast is an efficient way to pay for your student’s school meals. Payment should be placed in a sealed envelope with the child's name, grade, and pin number. Meals may be paid either by check or cash. The cashier will provide a friendly reminder when the student’s account balance is getting low at secondary schools. A weekly letter is mailed at the elementary level if a negative balance has occurred. Parents can monitor their child’s balance through Parent Link.

How do I receive a refund on my students account?

If you would like a refund of money from your child’s account, you must make a request in writing to the school office secretary. The information required is the child’s name and PIN as well as the address where the refund should be mailed.

How does my child receive a PIN number? Will the pin remain the same?

PIN numbers are issued when a student is enrolled in school by the office secretary. At the end of each school year, the information on each student is rolled over so that all student information is carried over to the next grade level. This includes the student’s account balance, lunch status and PIN. The PIN will remain the same each time your student moves to a new grade or school within the Jackson R-2 School District.

What is the charge policy for the food service department?

Students in grades K-12 are allowed to charge up to $15.00 for lunch. If students already owe the maximum allowed, the student will be offered a peanut butter sandwich or cheese and crackers with a carton of milk at no charge to their account. Breakfast may not be charged if a student exceeds the maximum charge limit allowed.

Parents are responsible for monitoring the amount of money in their child’s account and for paying back any charges incurred.

The Jackson R-2 Schools Food Service department does not allow any students to charge ala carte items.

How can I limit what my child can purchase for his/her account?

A child’s account can be blocked from ala carte purchases at the parent’s request. This will not prohibit your child from purchasing a school breakfast or lunch. The block will remain in effect until the office secretary is contacted to remove the block. Parents should send a note to the office secretary to request this service.

What happens to money left in my child’s meal account at the end of the school year?

Any money left in the child’s account at the end of the school year will be available on the first day of school the following year. The funds will also advance to another school in the district as your child progresses through Jackson R-2 Schools.

Who writes the monthly breakfast and lunch menus?

The Director of Food Service, Liz Aufdenberg. Feed back is also received through students and staff. All menus must follow the National School Breakfast and Lunch requirements for food items, portion sizes, and nutritional requirements.

Who determines the lunch time periods for my child’s school?

Each individual school principal establishes meal times. Federal guidelines state that lunch periods shall occur between 10:00 a.m. and 2 p.m. Breakfast is usually served 30 minutes prior to the school day beginning. Federal guidelines also state that there needs to be at least 2 hours from the end of breakfast to the beginning of lunch. Schools are encouraged to provide an adequate number of lunch periods that are sufficient in length to ensure all students have an opportunity to be served and a reasonable amount of time to eat their meals.

Why do adults pay more for their meals than the students?

The district receives federal reimbursement for meals served to children only. The value of this reimbursement plus any donated commodities must not be used to subsidize adult meals.

How does the food service department handle special diets or allergies?

Special diets and food allergies (including milk allergies) require a special form from a certified doctor to be on file with the school nurse. A new form is required each school year and should be sent to the school where your child attends. At the point of sales (POS) a block will alert the cashier of any allergy or special diet. Questions should be directed to the school nurse.

How do I become an employee for the Jackson R-2 Schools Food Service Department?

The department is always looking for enthusiastic individuals who are interested in serving children. Vacant positions are posted on the district web page or in the local newspaper.
